Code documents

Coding a document is the process of marking a document with the information that you identify during a review. Documents that are coded as responsive can then be produced and provided to a third party in response to a discovery request.

Depending on your case, you can code documents in the Code pane or the Conditional Coding pane. For information about how to display panes in your workspace, see Customize the workspace.

Tip: You can also edit the values of some fields directly in the List pane. To do this, double-click a field value. Fields that can be coded directly in the List pane appear with an icon in the column heading.

You can perform the following coding tasks:

View the existing coding values for a document, locate documents that are coded with the same values, or configure the layout of the Code pane. For more information, see View document coding.

Quickly code a document by selecting a color-coded value from a list. For more information, see Quick code documents.

Code documents in a template that changes color to indicate which fields you should code, depending on the values that you provide for related fields. For more information, see Code documents in the Conditional Coding pane.

Apply suggested coding values to a document. For more information, see Code documents using hints in the Code pane.

Add or update values in individual coding fields. For more information, see Code document fields in the Code pane.

Organize documents based on the subjects that are relevant to a case. For more information, see Code documents to issues in the Code pane.

Group related documents together for easier review and coding. For more information, see Code documents to binders in the Code pane.

Code email messages or other documents with the names of people or organizations. For more information, see Code documents to people or organizations in the Code pane.

Link a document to related objects, such as other documents, shared binders, issues, levels, saved searches, transcripts, or websites. For more information, see Link documents to other objects.

To speed up the document coding process, you can use keyboard shortcuts instead of the mouse. For information about the available keyboard shortcuts, see Keyboard shortcuts.
